AlertEye: spoken alarms on a legacy SCADA
Alarms that operators cannot miss: live values from the plant SCADA on kiosk screens and phones, with each alarm spoken aloud in Vietnamese.
The hard part
Add alarms that operators cannot miss, with read-only access and no changes to the control logic.
What I built
A read-only OPC UA connection secured with my own certificate chain, an alarm engine, kiosk screens and a phone app, and an offline Vietnamese neural voice.
Result
375 tags monitored; an alarm is spoken 1–3 s after a limit is crossed.
The problem
Operators at the plant needed alarms they could not miss, but the control system could not be modified to get them.
How it works
- AlertEye reads 375 tags from the plant SCADA over OPC UA, read-only, with encryption and a certificate chain I set up for the plant.
- An alarm engine compares each value against its limits and raises an alarm when one is crossed.
- Kiosk screens in the control room and a phone app show the live values, coloured by state.
- Each alarm is spoken aloud in Vietnamese by a neural voice that runs offline on site, 1–3 seconds after the limit is crossed.
It shares the read-only connection with the SCADA audit and network map.
